A few years ago, we planted a Maple Tree in our yard. It really took off and is quite big now. The shape of the Maple is lop-sided thanks to the high winds we have around here and another tree is pretty close to it. We are removing the other tree since it is just a 20' Poplar stump. My question is: Should I trim back some of the branches? If so, which ones? I do want it to become a good shade tree. Thank you! I'm not a tree expert, but I think I would be tempted to leave it be for a year or so after the other tree was removed. This might allow it to fill in a little.
I tend to agree with Netty. However if you feel that it does need pruning, I would only prune a few of the lower branches in late january ot february. The most of the sap should be down in the roots by then.
Thank you Netty and Sjoerd for your responses. I was also wondering if all the tree branches are too long. I'm afraid they might break this winter when we have heavy snowfalls. Do you think I should shorten them?
I woudn't prune anything alive right now. Anything dead can go. Maples as they age are not that tidy, As it ages you will have limbs drop. Please know maples send out shallow roots. Over time you will plant gardens outside its drip-line.
