I am planting a wildflower garden for Monarchs along my property line. This plant popped up, and I want to know if its a weed or keeper ? Are they beneficial for pollinators? It is about 3 to 4 feet high right now. larger image below
It could be a Paulownia or Abulilon theophrasti that is Velvet Leaf or Indian Mallow. bet it's Abulilon theophrasti....I'd call that a weed... If it's a Paulownia transplant it and it will grow into a large tree that will have purple wisteria like flowers in spring....I love it
I don't know the name but it looks an awful lot like a weed i've had. I let it grow because it looked interesting, then let it flower (mistake). The flower was miniscule and uninteresting but effective in yielding SEED!
Abulilon theophrasti makes sense. I had that in a wildflower mix, but the plants never got that big. This looks like it may get taller. Agree. The flowers are uninteresting, but it is an interesting looking weed.
Well, I read that it attracts butterflies, so I guess it belongs in my wildflower garden for butterflies.
no..... pull it as fast as you can. this is velvet weed. beautiful but a nasty invasive weed. we have it in the corn Dh spent hours over there on saturday pulling it and weed eating the patch to put up electric fence.
Here is my Paulownia tomentosa (Princess Tree) We cut it in half last night but I did take a few pics..It is unreal how much these plants look alike...
