Does any one know the name of the cerise gladiola type flower at the top left of the home page for the garden stew site please. I inherited a nice clump growing in a planter with the wild flag iris in the bog garden when we moved house. It finished flowering about three weeks ago. Any ideas please. I'm usually fairly good on plant I.D. but this one has me stumped! all the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer] author of 'Beyond the Potting Shed' a guide to grow your own and saving money.
Am I going to make myself unpopular or what? I cannot find a Hesperantha coccinea in the list of Hesperantha species in my books of South African bulbs and the flowers in the image are different to normal Hesperantha ones. Surely this is an image of Schizostylis cocciinea Mrs. Hegarty?
According to http://www.paghat.com/kaffir.html and http://www.plantzafrica.com/planthij/he ... ccinea.htm they are the same plant but was formerly Schizostylis coccinea
Hi. What can I say, Thank you seems somewhat inadequate! I will actually sleep tonight! You know how it is, something niggleing away, you know you should know what something is but can you think of it!! I blame my age!!!I too was unaware of the name change, so double thanks to Frank, Toni and Palustris. Now where is that pillow? All the best Paul Rix [old geezer]
Me neither. The latest Cape Bulb Book that I hav was printed in 2002 and makes no mention of any changes in the offing so it must be later than that. Ah well. If they can now say that Foxgloves (Digitalis sp.) are more closely related to Plantains (Plantago sp., not the Banana relatives) than they are to Scrophulariaceae (Snapdragons, etc.) then they can do anything cannot they?
I just found another gardening forum with information that the name change happened sometime in 2002. Probably after your book was completed and was already at the publishers being printed.
Must be very frustrating for the authors of these books when they do all that work and then the name gets changed. Cheers!
