getting started

Category: My First Spring Garden | Posted: Sun Apr 27, 2008 5:19 pm

I've had a ton of fun this year starting my very first garden. It's a small garden for now, but it lets me get out there and experiment with things and learn first hand about the various vegetables and gardening techniques.

I started my garden on March 22nd. I've planted three kinds of lettuce (Buttercrunch, Romaine, Amish Deer Tongue), two types of carrots (danvers half long, nantes scarlet), two types of beets (chiogga, golden detroit), cucumbers, two types of squash (zucchini and butternut) and snap peas. I have also started Tomatoes (Purple Cherokee and Rio Grande) and Peppers that are growing in a friend's greenhouse. I'll plant those within a couple of weeks.

Here is some of the Buttercrunch Lettuce. This one should be ready this week.

My beets are off to a good start. The Chiogga seemed to have a higher germination rate.

The carrots were a little slow to start. I probably have about 8 or 9.

I've also noticed some random potatoes cropping up. I assume that's a result of the compost.
