Viviann's Blog

It's a steep learning curve for this newbie gardener who's turning two acres of grass into an organic garden named in honor of an Estonian baby.

A Steep Learning Curve

Category: Arabella's Garden | Posted: Tue Apr 07, 2009 10:53 pm

Today is a chilly April day in Cambridge, Md. on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Even the blossoms on the trees appear to be shivering.
Frank, my landscaper/gardening specialist, said that I probably won't be able to plant any vegetables until the risk of frost is gone, namely mid April.
My vegetable boxes are waiting patiently. Frank's crew built them for me a month ago next to the still inactive greenhouse that came with my property.
The robins came early this year. Early in February. Everyone noticed because suddenly the air became animated with flying projectiles setting up their territory for nest building.
I placed two bird feeders in my recently planted cherry trees by the goldfish pond. The resident Canada geese are not so sure about the redefinition of the neighborhood. The pond in their opinion was only big enough for two geese.
Two more weeks . . . .
