House naming 'celebration'

Category: Miscellaneous | Posted: Thu Jan 25, 2007 8:41 am

Yesterday afternoon the bungalow was officially named, and a celebratory tipple downed as the name was attached to the wall.
I wanted a name I could relate to, and 'Always look on the bright side' was the basis of it.
Although the word had been fretsawed out of double thickness ply before I left my old place, I wasn't sure whether to go with it or not.
But yesterday morning I left the house to go shopping and the sun was gleaming off the white front wall so much, it had to be.
As it's the only named house in the road so far, maybe it'll start a trend.

Other jobs included starting to obscure the incongruous blue of the plunge pool. I got some reed screening and attached it to the pool uprights. I'll have to get some more to finish the job off.
A couple of palms would look good and I can pretend I'm in the Bahamas.
Note the ice on the pond. Brrrrrrrrr.

I have a 'named' house Pete (Heather Cottage) but it was the previous owners, not us, who actually named it. You have the same outside light as us too only ours is black!! I like the name 'Brightside'- it makes me smile - and also the style of writing you've chosen. Will you paint the name or leave it white?
The plunge pool looks much better with the screening around it as it no longer sticks out like a sore thumb in your garden - you could even grown sweet peas or something up against it now.

Your weather is obviously similar to ours at the moment. My pond has been frozen solid for 5 days now and the temperature hasn't risen above freezing.

'Brightside' is a fine name Pete, not pretentious like some I have cringed at. Really like the sign also.

I love your house name, Pete. We affectionately call ours 'crawfish flats.' I think I will get a pic of the front yard so all of you can see what a crop of crawfish chimney's we have.

'The Swamp' - not literally, I hope. And look forward to seeing the crawfish chimneys (I've not come across this description before).
I've decided my sign will be a bronze colour, and then given several coats of varnish to get a deep lustre.
So, got the name, now need to design the front garden to go with it.
The last people here passed on the usual bit of lawn and shrub border. It gives me something to think about.

Very nice, Pete,
and a lovely excuse to raise a glass. :D

I'm definitely picturing some banana trees
and Strelitzia around that pool,
a few big ferns, tiki torches and a muscle-bound cabana boy . . . . . . . . .
OH, sorry, I drifted off there for a moment.
