Four O'Clocks - Starting from Seeds!

Category: Garden Project - Seeds | Posted: Thu May 03, 2018 11:42 pm

Здравствуйте!

Today I planted some four o’clocks from seeds and I decided to try out a little trick and do a my own little science project. I soaked half of my seeds in warm water for 12+ hours and I planted the other half right out of the bag! Since I didn’t have a seed tray and if I can skip paying $5-$7 for a tray I always will, I decided to make a DIY seed tray. My boyfriend drinks about 10 bottles of water from those plastic water bottles daily, which I often scold him for since it’s so bad for the environment. However, since he goes through these things like crazy and the plastic bottles end up in the trash, I decided to use them for as DIY planters.

I took a pair of sheers, cut the plastic bottles down till they were all about 3” height and then took the sheers and poked a hole in the bottom of each bottle planter for drainage. In the end, I had about 14 for the unsoaked seeds and 10 for the soaked seeds. For the soil, I mixed potting soil with coffee grinds from breakfast (about two days worth, so there was enough to make the soil 20% coffee grinds). I finished off the mix by adding water to make the mixture nice and damp.

I didn’t fill each plastic planter all the way full, instead I filled them about half way and pressed them down to remove air holes. I made two indents in the soil in each planter and placed a seed in each one. So, two seeds in each plastic planter. I topped each planter off with dry potting soil, and gently pressed the soil down over the seeds. I sprayed them down with a bit of water from a mister to make the soil all the way damp.

I labeled each plastic planter, A1-A7, B1-B7 for the unsoaked seeds and C1 though C10 for the soaked seeds. I know the labeling system is a bit confusing. I wasn’t sure if I should leave the seeds uncovered or not, I read conflicting information. I decided to cover them lightly. I placed them on a tray and put them behind the shed where they would be out of the way but also have full to partial sun.

I’ll keep updating this thread with pictures so that I can keep track of the results. I have a sneaking suspicion that the soaked seeds will germinate quicker, it just makes sense to me!

I love 4 O'clocks!
I have saved the root from mine for the past few years and re-plant each spring. I get some impressive sized plants from these big roots!
24 plants ... you are going to have LOTS!
