Winter Propagation for seeds

Category: Propagation | Posted: Mon Jun 08, 2009 12:05 am

In one of my daily emails this week I received instructions on how to sow seeds anytime and place them outside and let them come up whenever the time is right for that certain seed. The article said to take any kind of container with a clear plastic cover, such as take out food from a Chinese restaurant, the foil pan with a fitted lid or you could use butter bowls etc. Milk jugs could be cut, place soil and seed inside and then tape the top back in place. Very important was to put slits in the bottom for drainage and also in top for ventilation, just leave the top off the milk jugs for ventilation. Place them anywhere outside, they said they used their picnic table to keep them away from animals and the seed would go through the cycles needed for germination.I have a problem getting seed to grow after they come up to the point of getting big enough to set out. They usually just wilt and fall over dead. This method they will already be hardened off. I plan to give it a try and see what I can accomplish. Have any of you tried this?

There have been a couple of members do winter sowing over the years but I can not find their posts.

I thought about trying it winter before last but realized that you have to actually have winter weather for winter sowing to be successful...so it isn't an option here.

Biita has done winter sowing for a few years but then she was living in arctic Norway and had a long winter for the project. They were moving this past winter so she didn't do any but will probably be right back into it this coming winter.
