Rain, Rain, Go Away, Come Back Another Day!

Category: Melisa's Garden | Posted: Tue May 05, 2009 12:18 pm

We've had 5 or 6 days of rain now (in Middle Tennessee) and the 7 day forecast shows nothing but more of the same. I'm ready for a little sun. Please note, I'm not asking for another drought, but I'd really like the rain to try to disperse itself throughout the summer! I might have to get out there and weed and plant in the rain...but I'd really rather not have to. Does anyone know if root rot is a concern if it rains continuously for almost 2 straight weeks? (I guess it works ok for them up in Seattle...)

not sure on the root rot, i guess it might be plant specific? Ive got rain here today and all week, the plants and vedge sure seem to like it although its not been super heavy..

Coming from Scotland we're well used to gardening in the rain - we really don't have a choice. LOL
I've never had a problem with root rot though. As Green_Numb says it's probably plant specific.

I do not think that you will have a root rot problem (at least I hope not) Just ensure that you have adequate drainage if your plants are in containers..
We also have two or three spells of continuous rain in our winter. These spells usually last for 5 to 7 days at a time and I never had root rot even with a high water table.

There are some plants that don't like continuously wet roots but in my experience it is mostly annuals that have that problem.

We had over 11 inches of rain in June 2007 and all I lost were the Snapdragons. The perennials loved it....the rain that is, not the loss of the Snaps :)

Thanks for the info, everyone. Toni, your message cracked me up. I could just envision the perennials celebrating the snapdragons demise! Guess I'll put on the shiny boots and wade out there. Perhaps I'll plant some rice. (Just kidding.)
