Work in late April and May creating mixed border

Category: Roses and Garden | Posted: Sun Jun 14, 2009 6:36 pm

As this is a new blog , so a little background info first. We had moved in November of last year from western Maine to Southern Maine about a 35 mile move. We had a ranch with about a acre worth of land, which was mostly cleared. The new home is a much nicer colonial, with more land, but smack dab in the middle of the woods. To create garden space, Ive had to create it out of the woods, which has been alot of back breaking work.

Some pics. Front house...

Front yard, where first mixed border garden is going into...

Me working on front bed border...

Well you get wood, when you cut wood.. Alot of this was burnable wood, which I passed on to friends, I dont have a wood burner here...

Front view of new bed...

Mulched and planted..

Side view...

When creating new garden beds in the middle of the woods, you need amendments, I got two truckloads of composted horse manure and shavings... about 10 yards of loam and some compost.

This was phase I... I have 3 or 4 phases of making mixed borders.

More to come!

Thanks for looking

Silverkelt

Hi Silverkelt, congrats on your new home, garden and blog here :) Looks like you have already done a lot of hard work, it'll surely pay off when everything gets established in the earth.

Whew. What a great job there. Quite a project. It will be neat to see how it develops -- sometime tell us what you planted in there. House is pretty too. Congrats!

What a job, but a good opportunity to create on a blank slate. Lucky you!

How is your back feeling after all that hard work? You have done a fantastic job clearing out all those trees and amending the soil. Once the flowers bloom, you are going to have an amazing place. Congratulations!
