Amish Paste Tomato Seeds

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Fri Feb 15, 2013 6:17 pm

I finally sent about 15 Amish Paste Tomato seeds to a Garden Stew Member in Nebraska. I hope they do well for her. It's a very fleshy, thick meaty Roma type heirloom. Very nice flavor and texture for canning, salads, or bruschetta.
Weather here today, southern Delaware, mid 50's but supposed to possibly get snow tonight. Booo. A cold, dreary weekend in store. Maybe I'll dig out my seed sprouting supplies and make sure all is ready. Me and all of my seeds are for sure. Peace

Happy Valentines Day!

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Thu Feb 14, 2013 3:18 pm

Happy Valentines Day to All. One only has to look at the calendar to see that we are half way through February. I am anxious for an early spring. I have many projects to do. A new perennial/veggie bed, a small greenhouse, finish my wooden walkway. replace old boards on my deck, and enlarge my existing shed. I think I can accomplish these by September of 2015.lol. This is a very ambitious schedule but I need to get them done. I started on the walk last spring but back problems held me up. I'm not used to being slowed up by health problems. I have an MRI tomorrow to see what is going on. My Doctor told me I will probably need an operation. Maybe I'll really be slower. Who knows. It's in the hands of the good Lord. (and warm weather helps)Peace

Spring, Please Be Early!

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Tue Feb 12, 2013 12:27 pm

I don't know if it's cabin fever or just a dislike anymore of getting up in the dark at 5:15 to go to work. I would rather have sunlight and 75 and above temps. It's been cool and rainy here in southern Delaware although yesterday was 54 degrees and partly cloudy. Today is supposed to be 50 and sunny. I am starting to sort through my seed supply and I will send one of our members the Amish Paste tomato seeds I promised her.

I probably will plant a lot of peppers this year, hot and sweet. They do well for me as I don't have full sun all day. This year, as in the past, I will experiment with different ways to get more light to my raised garden beds. I am anxious to try a reflective material behind the beds so sunlight will surround the plants, kind of like 8 hours concentrated into 4. Maybe a new product???? Peace

Polar Bear Jump!

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Tue Feb 05, 2013 2:33 pm

Sunday, February 3rd was the 22nd year for the Lewes Polar Bear plunge for Special Olympics Delaware. The air temp was 36, water temp was 40. About 2,000 people jumped into the Atlantic Ocean at Rehoboth Beach around 1 pm. I will have to check on the final tally of funds that were raised. It was as usual a good time. I can't really describe the feeling you experience when one does this. Kinda like running a five mile race in twenty seconds. It's ok as long as the wind isn't blowing and the air temp. is not below freezing. Our local club jumps again on March 3 at the Cape Henlopen State Park. The number of jumpers goes from 2,000 down to maybe four. We're the crazy ones. Weather is supposed to get warmer. Peace.

Spring in January!

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Fri Feb 01, 2013 6:12 pm

Wow. We went from the teens to the 60's in three days. I have crocus in bloom and my narcissus and daffodils are out of the soil about 4". Sugar maple buds are getting large, almost like they want to leaf out. A sign of spring??? I think it's too early for this type of behavior with mother nature. Today we had 1/4" of snow. Weird. Stuff will freeze if exposed to low temps and budded out.
I will be jumping in the Atlantic Ocean this Sunday for the 22nd Lewes Polar Bear Plunge. We raise money for Special Olympics Delaware. It is one of the most successful, one day fund raisers in the country. We usually raise around $600,000.00 dollars. It isn't too bad unless the temp is below freezing. I'll let ya'll know how it goes. Peace

Maybe Normal Weather?

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Tue Jan 29, 2013 5:25 pm

Hello All. The weather seems to be back to whatever normal is.The low last night was 26, high today supposed to be 55. I couldn't do much outside over the weekend because of cold weather. My darling wife decided it was a good time to hang wooden blinds on our family room windows and hang the antique curtain rods that we have had for 20+ years. It went really well with me only uttering a few outbursts of unusual words.
I did manage to peek at some seed and garden supply catalogs. I found an interesting item. A 6x8' greenhouse for $299. It has an aluminum frame, polycarbonate glazing, and a roof vent. I would need to supply the base for it but over all, I think it's worth the money. I will check it out some more. Come on spring! Peace

What Happened to the Weather?

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Tue Jan 22, 2013 5:08 pm

Antarctica exchanged places with Delaware overnight and is expected to stay for about a week!High today is 21,low tonight,12. I know that those temps. would probably be a heat wave in the Dakotas or Wisconsin but for here it is darn cold!
I did get my compost turned on Saturday and removed some old tomato and pepper plant stems. I will probably burn them in a week or so. Sometime soon I need to get some cow manure and spread it on my raised beds and large pots. I also need to get some topsoil to start a new perennial bed where some large Holly Trees were. What a difference it makes to see daylight where those two monsters were. Peace, Bruce

No Snow but Cold!

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Fri Jan 18, 2013 3:26 pm

The weather man got it wrong although Weather Underground nailed it on the head. The rain is finally done but we had snow showers where I live and they were overnight. High today should be 38 although it could be much colder. I was hoping to do a little work with my raised beds over the weekend but they will probably be too wet. I can always rotate some compost and shred some leaves. On the plus side, my wife received a Paleonopsis Orchid two years ago from her co-workers when her Dad passed away. It usually flowers twice a year and one of the times it seems to flower around the anniversary of his death. It is close to flowering now. It is beautiful. Peace

Rain Again Today

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Thu Jan 17, 2013 2:11 pm

January 17, 2013.
The weatherman is wrong. "Occasional light showers today." So far a fairly heavy rain through the night and also this morning. Maybe 3-6" of wet snow tonight. Wow. Not my kind of weather. We need the rain and moisture for later on in the spring. Our last few springs have been really dry. Maybe this year will be different. I'll let you know what happens weatherwise tonight here tomorrow. Peace.

Welcome to a blog from Delaware!

Category: Mangoman's Blog | Posted: Wed Jan 16, 2013 7:07 pm

I just joined Garden Stew and I look forward to the many opportunities to make friends and share thoughts and ideas. I have been a professional gardener in another life and currently enjoy my perennial and annual plantings, collecting seeds, and working through the challenges of trying to have a successful vegetable garden in the sand of coastal Delaware and living in the woods. I still need to get more sunlight to my veggies. I may try topping some holly, maple, and sassafras trees into a hedge type border. The trees aren't very large in diameter and are only about 15 to 20' tall. I don't have a lawn and am very proud of what I have accomplished with ornamental grasses, hostas, daylilies, liriope, and some various shrubs. As of this writing it is 41 degrees and a light rain which we've had for three days now. Winters aren't too severe here along the coast of southern Delaware. Next week it is supposed to turn colder. Highs in the mid to upper twenties. Yuk. The older I get, the more I dislike winter. I will send some pictures of summertime shots when I figure out how to get them here. Thanks for reading. Peace, Bruce
