When will Hummingbirds leave my flower garden in KY?

Category: Wild Birds & Daylilies ~ BJ's Blog | Posted: Wed Aug 06, 2008 10:30 pm

My hummingbirds will be flying south soon. Anyone know when they start migrating south for the winter,
from KY?

Plants we moved are doing great! Rose of Sharon has it's first lavender bloom and Rome tomatoes are producing...last count: 6 with 3 red/ripe ones.

With temperatures in the 90s, I'm staying indoors!

Moving Our Trees And Plants FIRST!

Category: Wild Birds & Daylilies ~ BJ's Blog | Posted: Wed Jul 02, 2008 11:22 am

We have a new home about 44 miles away and we're finishing up moving this week. For the last two weeks we have been dead tired taking our greenery to our new place and planting them. On this trip is where I got hooked on daylilies. We pass a beautiful daylily garden every day and guess what!!!
Plants for sale!!! Stopped and bought my first daylily, the coral Siloam Tiny Jewell. Took it straight on to our new place and planted it. Yesterday, we were in Walmart, and wouldn't you know they had a good buy on Colorado Blue Spruce. Got to the register and it was even $3 more less. What a buy. Hubby Ed planted it right away too. So far we have moved and planted 3 Wintergreen Boxwood (last one to be planted today, had to keep them watered real good), 3 azaleas, a Clump River Birch, (right now there's a wild brown bunny outside my window in the old flower bed nibbling, I'll miss him.), panseys, 4 yellow forsythia (last two to be planted today), white rose, red rose, 3 Nikko Blue Hydrangea that may not survive as our mowing person cut them down and all that was left was little sticks and roots, white Jet Trail Flowering Quince, Lavender Chiffon Rose of Sharon. You can tell, Walmart had a great February sale!!! Loved it! Oh, we also got an Arborvite 4' like a Christmas tree, maybe. Good thing yard at new house (revived very old farm house on Main St.) has a long wide front yard and there were only 2 Rhodendren there. So, we're really having fun!!!. Plenty of space left for my daylilies and local outdoor birds. Last nigh we were coming back around midnight and there in the dark was a tractor-trailer stopped in the road. We thought maybe a wreck. But when we finally got to move, they were black-topping the country road. Our 44 mile trip is all country road and sooooo dark.
Taking something again today. We had hung 4 waving petunia baskets on the front porch. Red, peach, purple and one with red, white & blue. All need shorter new petunias added to the middle section. The red, white & blue was especially pretty.
Tired and anxious!

Welcome to my Wild Bird & Daylily Blog

Category: Wild Birds & Daylilies ~ BJ's Blog | Posted: Mon Jun 30, 2008 2:44 pm

My Daylily Garden ~ we have just started planting daylilies in our large front yard. They're planted around my birdbath. Started getting compliments from neighbors on first day! Next, we will start planting daylilies down beside our walkway toward the street. We're on a corner lot on Main St., an excellent place to display
our plantings.

Wild Birds ~ Our birdfeeder is placed by the birdbath and a nest box in tree across from it. First day we had cardinals, then bluejay. Hoping to attract yellow finch and bluebirds. The finch food
is out in view and we'll be adding some bluebird nest boxes soon.
