Pianolady's Gardens
Mother's Day
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sat May 12, 2012 1:40 am Mother's Day can only mean one thing in our household. Time to plant the vegetable garden! My husband got the garden all tilled and ready to go, and I'm ready for a weekend of planting. Plans this year include sweet corn, beans, peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and if I have any room left over (unlikely), watermelon or winter squash. This blog entry has been viewed 344 times
A Great Way to End a Stressful Day (Graphic Heavy)
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Thu May 10, 2012 1:41 am I spent a good deal of the day talking to contractors and bankers. Needless to say, I was ready for some relaxed entertainment. So I grabbed my camera and headed outside! My little berm... Penstemon Starship Enterprise Carefree Wonder This one's actually in my neighbor's yard... This blog entry has been viewed 587 times
Menard's $2.77 Perennial Sale
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Wed May 09, 2012 3:15 pm My excuse is, "but it was on sale!". But, $2.77 really is a good sale on 6" pot perennials, and they were of nice quality. I was so very happy to see these plants were actually filling the pot with roots without being root-bound, instead of finding a small plug had just been put in a bigger pot so they could charge more. *begin vent* This is something I'm seeing in one particular large nursery lately, it is just wrong to charge me $10 for a $.99 plug in a big pot! At least put this stuff out of circulation until it's ready to be sold! *end vent* So, I picked up some English Lavender 'Munstead', Meadow Sage 'East Friesland', Coneflower 'PowWow Wild Berry', Speedwell 'Fairytale' and Spotted Dead Nettle 'White Nancy'. I'm filling in what is technically a partial shade garden under the walnut tree, however we're going to be removing the walnut tree soon and I think these plants might be able to handle the tannic acid left over from the walnut tree. We'll see! I also picked up a large bag of stargazer lilies on sale, but planted those as far away from the walnut tree as I could in that area, I think they'll be fine. Lost Another One
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sun May 06, 2012 9:26 pm Never fails, at least one comes back "dead" each year. I thought it wouldn't happen this year due to the mild winter. I suppose it's bound to happen as I try to grow things not suggested for my zone, but I usually do have pretty good luck overall with roses. So, I'll let my latest 'Dr. Huey' have it's moment of glory before I shovel prune it! Dr. Huey rootstock ( photo / image / picture from Pianolady's Garden ) In better news, I divided a bunch of hostas and expanded my shade garden out back. It was like playing in mud with all the rain we've had lately. But it made it easier to divide the plants. It's Been a Busy Day!
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sun May 06, 2012 2:02 am Our son calls this morning to let me know he couldn't fit all his stuff in his car to come home for the summer (has a summer job here). So I trek off on a 2 1/2 hour jaunt to go help him out. Good news is I found a great greenhouse on the way! I was good though, came back with just one thing (a hardy hibiscus 'Kopper King'). I came home to find a few more iris varieties blooming, have no idea what kind they are, but the dark red/purple one is really intriguing. Then there's this one... I also got my berm weeded. Planted my Amsonia 'Blue Ice' (Blue Star Flower) I found on Friday! I also found & planted the fine-leafed Arkansas Blue Star, but they aren't in bloom right now. And realized I really should have cut back my Weigela bush this year... And some Calibrachoa just for fun...one of my favorites for hanging baskets. I have a bog garden!
Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Fri May 04, 2012 1:57 am Well...I've had the bog for some time, with one plant in it. It's left over from my ponds. I turned one pond into a "bog garden" and filled in the other. A few years passed with my one plant. Finally I played in the mud today and have it planted full. Can't wait to see how it looks in a month or so. I'll post photos then (it looks a little sad right now). This blog entry has been viewed 308 times
Park Inn & City National Bank (Mason City, IA)
Category: Architecture & FLW | Posted: Thu May 03, 2012 3:42 am We were fortunate enough to visit the Park Inn September 10 & 11, 2011 during it's grand opening. Originally, the bank was the vault-like east end, with the law offices between the bank and the hotel. The exterior remains true to Wright's Wasmuth Portfolio rendering, and the interior has been very well converted into a modern day hotel. We were very impressed with the interior conversion, and the the attention given to keeping as much of the original plan intact as possible. This was an impressive task, and well done, especially when accommodating modern day ADA laws and fire codes. This is the north side of the entire complex. The hotel is on the right, originally law and bank offices were in the middle section, and the bank is on the far left. This is the bank main doors. This is the hotel meeting room off the main lobby. This is the skylight stained glass windows in the hotel. This is the lobby where you check in. The low ceiling upon entering in typical of a Frank Lloyd Wright design. It encourages you to continue on into the larger room. More windows... FLW design barrel chairs. 2nd story windows looking out into the city park. Another effort to bring the outdoors "in". More can be found here. http://flwarchitecture.blogspot.com/search/label/Park%20Inn%201910 Last edited: Thu May 03, 2012 8:40 pm This blog entry has been viewed 535 times
