Cover the holes in the bottom of your pot or container with mesh, gravel, paper towel or a coffee filter to prevent the soil from washing away when watering. Last Year's Potting Soil

Category: Container Gardening | Posted: Tue Apr 14, 2009 1:19 pm

The best advice is to dump it in your garden or woods, only reuse if you are sure there are no disease problems left over from the previous season. You will need to fertilize more frequently the second year because many of the nutrients have been lost or used by the plants the previous season. Organic media will decrease as well, which may slow water drainage and root growth. Best advice, start with new soil each year if possible.

Advantages of Repotting Your Containers

Category: Container Gardening | Posted: Wed Apr 08, 2009 1:48 pm

The great benefit of gardening in planters and containers is that you can change your mind or become creative within moments with new plants. Repotting your garden planters allows the plants more room to grow, and of course bloom more profusely as more nutrients become available. Freshen up your arrangements by removing dead leaves, flowers or roots and give a good pruning too.

Great Garden Planter Arrangements

Category: Container Gardening | Posted: Thu Apr 02, 2009 2:32 pm

One of the keys to having a great planter arrangement anywhere on your deck, patio or garden is to have one of your containers dominate the cluster. Place the tallest element at the back of your composition with the smaller pots on either side. Of course, you will want to plant the larger container with something striking, like a grass or tall foliage.

Containers or garden planters always look best when planted in groups, particularly groups of three. The triangular arrangement gives your pots a very pleasing eye catching result. Do remember to place the dominant planter or garden urn in the center, surrounded by the lower ones. An artist knows what works and this arrangement can be found in all good art forms.

When to Repot Your Container Plants

Category: Container Gardening | Posted: Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:32 pm

You will definitely see signs when your plants in your pots and containers need to be repotted. The leaves on your plants may turn yellow; have brown tips or just start to fall off. The soil in the planter becomes very solid and hard to penetrate. When the roots begin to come through the bottom of your garden planters, you will need to think about dividing and/or using a large container.
