Life with Paws and Petals

Back to the Gardens

Category: Just stuff | Posted: Thu Feb 11, 2010 3:03 pm

Now that we've gotten through the trauma of the new puppies and I am finally on the upswing some of this horrid bronchial pneumonia I've had, I can return to thoughts of spring and my gardens. My hubby and I have been seriously considering a greenhouse. We can't afford a pretty fancy one like we would like, but it would sure benefit us and some of those around us who can't grow gardens to help supply a need. So we need to get creative.

We live in an area where the economy is terribly bad and so many people are out of work. Last year after I canned, I was able to provide a couple of families with some veggies to get them through the winter. As we watched how that happened and we ourselves were blessed by being able to do this, we are now looking to do more.

So, does anyone have ideas or suggestions that we could look into. We are scanning all websites and catalogs that we can trying to get ideas. We have an area on the side of the mountain that could easily handle a 16' x 50' greenhouse. Although a small part of that will be sectioned off for chickens. Now that is something new I am going to try this year. We'll talk about that later. I have discovered there is nothing like fresh eggs. Good for us and good for the dogs.

Bring on the ideas and suggestions PLEASE!

Oh yeah, we are starting to investigate root cellaring too. Found a fantastic book I just started reading. So far it's been very informative.
We shall see.

New Puppies

Category: Just stuff | Posted: Thu Feb 11, 2010 1:52 pm

Here's the family. Dad is still kind of a puppy himself in case you can't tell. He doesn't go anywhere without that teddy bear. I'm guessing I will have to buy 3 more teddy bears for the babies. We already have a heartbeat bear in the whelping area for them. They love it!

Puppies and Spring

Category: Just stuff | Posted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 7:25 pm

Well after a very long weekend and finally an emergency c-section we have our Newfoundland puppies. Mom and babies are well and will come home tomorrow afternoon. We had 3 out of 4 survive.

We are so excited and yet I know that about the time those pups are able to run freely outside I will be digging and planting spring stuff. Should be interesting.

At least now I can get back to planning and ordering my seed and nursery stock. Yeahhh!

Have a good week everybody.

Long Time No See

Category: Just stuff | Posted: Sat Feb 06, 2010 8:04 pm

Well, life is still good here in the mountains of Idaho. I've been gone for awhile. Spent a few weeks at Xmas time in Iowa with my very precious new twin grand babies. (I'm not a proud grandma, ha ha). Then I came home to find out one of our precious Newfies is expecting. We are actually expecting puppies any day now. Yeah! And then to top it off, our weather has been incredibly warm and I have spring fever really bad. All the wonderful seed catalogs are coming, the nursery catalogs are beckoning to me and I can smell the dirt because there is no snow.

So this year we are going to have a couple of adventures in trying some new things, both in growing and storing our harvest. Stay posted to see how it all works out, because we are newbies at some of this.

I hope you all had a great winter and are emerging with new visions of green in your hearts.

Be blessed all of you!

Hmmmmm #2? ( photo / image / picture from Newfpaws's Garden )

Ok so I had this strange thing in my yard this year in September. Flew like a hummingbird and was the size of a hummingbird. And it had took nectar from the flowers just like a hummingbird? Is it a type of hummingbird? Anyone know what it is!

Beautiful September Morning

Silver Lace Vine September Bloom ( photo / image / picture from Newfpaws's Garden )

I took this on the morning of September 18th. This silver lace vine is highly invasive but so beautiful I can't bring myself to get rid of it. In Feb of this year it only touched above the top of the gazebo on one side. Now look at it. To me it is breathtaking. I just whack it back alot during the summer. It even grows up through the cracks in the gazebo floor. I love my yard!

Sanctuary for me

So I finally figured out how to insert photos into the post itself. I will get there I promise.

The picture above was taken July 13th. This is around my gazebo which my husband (who is not a carpenter) built from scratch with no plans. I love it!

The other picture is of one of our gardens in August.

It did very well. Discovered value of neighbors goat poop!!!

Wow - so much for short delay

Category: Just stuff | Posted: Thu Sep 17, 2009 9:22 pm

So my short delay turned into several months. All is well and I am home and up and running. Pic is of one of my gardens. I had two but now they are joined into one. Lots more work but yummy stuff comes out of that.
Lawn pics will follow in another post. The yard was absolutely incredible this year if I say so myself.
