Searching for scratch chili pepper pickle recipe

I am looking for a recipe my dad and I use to make during pickling season in NC. I remember we made a sweet brine that included pickling spice, then we stuffed fresh pickling cucumber sliced in spears in a jar along with a red chili (also from the garden), a bit of alum, and I think (but I am not positive) a bit of garlic. We may have even dropped a few peppercorn in the jar. They were not put in a bath, just sealed from the cooling of the hot brine. OMG, so delicious and I am missing those pickles now that my dad is gone and I can't find the recipe.
