I used to fish that beach in the winter Daniel, it gets South Westerly gales where the waves crash over the entire road yet the Leeks survive the salt and the wind

Found these today, Lamb's Lettuce, Valeriana locusta.

It's self seeded from some I grew in a pot here a few winters ago. It's an old crop that you can pick as a salad leaf in the winter. Small but tasty :) Before it flowers it forms small clumps like a very small lettuce.

Having found this thread to be really interesting and worthwhile, I decided to do a bit of research, and 'discovered' a few heritage seeds from a company here in the UK.
Among the seeds that I have sent for were the Manglewurzels. [IMG] This one is yellow eckendorf. The other one is mammoth red.
There were a fair few other seeds in the order too..... it is quite usual for me to get carried away when it comes to ordering seeds and similar :whistling:

It's part Beetroot, part Sugar Beet and part washing machine as far as we can make out :D I used to get something like that from off the farm carts when I lived in the West Country but not that big :D

It can stay in the ground for a long time as you use the greenery on top. Not so earthy as beetroot and quite good roasted as well as boiled. A good bet I thought as a survival vegetable - as pumpkin can be!! Worth a try.

I grew a Beetroot some years ago by starting it off in January on a hot bed. Time it got to August and the vegetable show the judges didn't know what to make of it...

That one Beetroot filled an entire sweet jar when I pickled it

We got the seeds today Says to sow direct at this time of year but the weather has been so pants I sowed in modules for planting out later.

Tetters bought loads of seeds from this lady, came with a lovely card in the parcel.

Also found a Fat Hen plant growing on the hardstanding this morning, the seed must have come in with the lorry load of road planings as I've not seen any others growing here.

This was a Medieval spinach plant, I've eaten a lot of it, it's very nice but it can prevent the uptake of calcium so best eat it sparingly or all your teeth might fall out like mine have
