I did an accidental Weedkiller spray on a plant some seven years ago it died as you would expect. Not done it since. Sorry about your plants...
Plant pots freeze the roots here in winter, plant roots are protected to a certain depth in the soil from frost. Not something we want to think...

I bet it's thatch. It's hard slog if it is but worth it. Tools: any thatch rake will remove it be prepared for the lawn to look a mess till grass...
