As the fall season turns the corner and heads to the winter months some flowers still have a grasp on the season past. Daylilies come in many sizes, shapes color and blooming characteristics. While each flower only has to dress up for a day, the bounty of flowers on each scape allows a plant to have a bloom period of several weeks. Some plants even put on an encore presentation later in the season. These are recognized as “Reblooms”. Though shorter in stature their flowers are still an added bonus, usually eliciting an “Oh!!A daylily”. Many of the plants are now bowing to inevitable as the cold temperatures send the them into hibernation. Their yellowing leaves and brown stalks dot the gardenscape during a crisp fall morning walk. Yesterday, my morning walk was punctuated with an “Oh!! A daylily”. Peering out from the dead vegetation a reblooming ‘Rosy Returns’ had decided that dress-up day was that day and it was going to be the last daylily of the season. While it has a couple of friends yet to bloom, their timing has them flirting with the final curtain: a killing frost. Smile!! It is always so nice seeing those late re-bloomers. It is almost like they are showing solidarity with me...in not wanting the season to end.
Brave little daylily, I applaud you Thanks for showing us that there is life in the garden yet Jerry.
This reminds me of my youngest daughter- she won't quit! Beautiful while doing it too. Enjoy your bloom- winter is on it's way.
