    do your best. even if it doesn't survive you learned something new. as I looked at the original photo I see the bad spot right at the bottom of the trunk. big oval indent. good luck.

    Update: A storm killed the plant in question which looked to be struggling to come back. I'll go baby hunting. Thanks again for all the assistance.
