Hey Sjoerd, that was the beginning of July when they started sitting on the nest. Something got into the nest and they lost all the eggs. Half of them were in the pond! Another girl is laying on three eggs now. I figure mid August they'll hatch, which should give them a couple months to ready for winter....if not, us 'softies' will make room for them in the cabin! :D

Looks like the fire here might be contained. Looking for verification, but no more 'prepare for evacuation' calls! Whew!!! Still very hot and smokie here. Lots of fires all over the eastern part of the state. Hope not to get this close to one again!

Glad you are safe and hope it stays that way. I don't ever remember such a hot dry summer. Even over here west of the mountains have had mainly 80 degree days since the beginning of July. I had to buy some summer shirts, since sweaters just weren't making it.

I know Jewell! We can't seem to shake the 90's!!!

Great news! We still have to be ready to evac, just in case, but the fire has been preliminarily contained and hopefully completely soon!

This fire has got us thinking about a lot of things. As gardeners, I'm sure we all are saving our own seed and/or stacking up on seed, and preserving our harvests. One thing that stopped me dead in my tracks during this fire was when i figured out there was no way in heck we could take all these things with us! What's the good in stocking up if you can't save it during such a crisis.

I'd like to start a thread somewhere about how we could go about preserving our harvest and having seed stashes and being able to make sure they're safe when we come back if we had to evacuate.

Would separate root cellars if buried sufficiently be good caches? I wonder if the topic has come up at Permies. With animals and being as materialistic as I am I can't imagine the fear of having to evacuate. Since I commute my car is already full of work stuff, an overnight bag, and bags for shopping. How do you prep for a full scale evacuation?

Too bad about the nest and eggs.; however, there is now a new nest with three eggs. Fingers crossed that it will hold out and be successful.

I shall rest easier when you can inform us that the threat of evacuation is over.

That is an interesting problem that you have signalled. Places like bank a vault, or even one of those storage cells that folks can rent to store furniture and other things in.

These have a price tag attached, but perhaps you could go in with some friends. Would this be a viable interim solution for you?

You could also dig a clamp and make it as fancy and protective as your mind can conceive. Do you know what a clamp is?

Gosh, I'd never thought about you having to save your seeds from a fire! Do you have a friend/fellow gardener who would stash some seeds for you? I joke about having a back-up plan if one of my favorite plants dies. I've given starts to several people, who know they have to give starts to me if something awful happens. It may not be a joke after all. Perhaps you could do this with seeds?
I'll keep my fingers crossed that you don't have to evacuate, and that the fires are contained and put out.

    Great suggestions all!!!

No Sjoerd, I don't know what a clamp is? Could you explain? As for the storgae places, we thought of that, but they are all booked here due to the fires!

Just got word that the fire is fully contained, and they are bringing in a large number of firefighters to do a big backfire tonight to secure the fireline.

Now, may all the other people experiencing fires be resolved!

Well Bunkie...once the fires is a thing of the past and things begin to return to normal...those storage places may again become available. You'll be set then. ;)

    A clamp.....have a look here:
    http://www.volkstuindersvereniginghoorn ... age18.html

It is the third topic down the page.

Wish that I could be of more help.

And the hits just keep on coming here... and the gardens are still standing...

This is a dust cloud/storm they call a Haboob (which usually happens in places like Arizona) that went thru the whole area. (I'm using news pics here again cause I can't find my camera still.)

This went thru our area and lots of rain followed. Really hairy with the winds! In other counties trees were uprooted...even the news truck had a tree fall on it!

"TRAFFIC ALERT: From Washington State Patrol, there is zero visibility in multiple locations due to blowing dust from a severe thunderstorm. Multiple crashes in Whitman, Lincoln & Adams County. PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY."

That is a huge garden! What do you do with all the produce? You also have a beautiful view in the background. I love those pines!
