Lovely collection of Coleus, Ware. Doing it with clippings are fun and dead easy, don't you think? I used to nip the flower spikes off as well. The variety that you have is quite impressive.
These are a few of my favorite ones. The bench that my very favorite person is sitting on is from last year.
For those who tried to save Coleus inside for winter, how did it go? Here's a pot of cuttings taken in Oct, (with a few other plants in there,) pic from today. I've taken cuttings several times from each kind so far this spring. Now that there's some of each going well in the yard, will soon unpot this & put in ground somewhere.
I've had good luck with over wintering coleus. I break off the top 3 to 4 inches and stick them into a pot with some very moist almost wet potting mix. I had to keep pinching them though because they became leggy over the winter months. I also have saved seed from coleus I've grown but they don't seem to always come true to the parent plant. I even got some quite ugly colors from the seedling. lol You have some very nice varieties in your pot there.
The ones in the bench where my hubby is sitting are 2 years old. I kept them in the greenhouse all Winter until last Fall, then I let them freeze. I have already put new ones in it for this year....
TY, Ginny. So cool to hear from other "addicts!" LOL! Here's some of the cuttings I've been able to use around my pots & yard from keeping them inside over winter. This pot is really an old grill. Squirrels keep tearing it up but I finally put the rocks in there & things are starting to look like they're getting going. A mostly-shady spot with Coleus & little cuttings of lots of colorful little tropical plants:
Coleus rock! I love them and actually I'm not sure why I stopped growing them.... they complement hostas beautifully. Here is one from my yard a couple of years ago.
I was taking pics of my Coleus yesterday to check if I still had all of them (after saving inside for winter.) I do! Indian Summer: Electric Lime on left, Florida Sun Jade on right: Stormy Weather with a strange chimera stem on the left: Red Ruffles: Perilla 'Magilla': India Frills:
Wow, beautiful colors on your coleus Purpleinopp! I've had a few of them over the years but since I moved haven't bought any of the new varieties. This year just sprinkled a 25 cent packet of coleus seed in my caladium pots and the colors came out looking pretty nice.
It's been a great summer for Coleus here. Let's see folks' results here at the end of the year, before Jack Frost shows up! I think this is my fav spot in my yard this year. (Had to crop & resize a copy of the pic a LOT to get it to upload here.) I haven't taken my final year-end pics yet, but here's a couple more shots from yesterday. Perilla 'Magilla,' often mistaken for & sold as Coleus, with red lilies (Lycoris radiata.) A cute little Coleus seedling that must be really smart, put itself near other baby plants. LOL!
I didn't take my benches in this year. Didn't have the time or the space in the greenhouse. I did take clippings so I would have more of my favorite coleus in my gardens next year. This year our greenhouse is out of control. I just love to grow new plants from old ones.
