Are there any learned collectors anywhere who know what this was/is used for.The lid is hinged, there is a hole in the lid,a sort of loop maybe used to open the container or carry it.It is glass, maybe a honey container,I really like the colours in the glass that is the reason I bought it 29yrs ago.It is actually quite heavy too. I would agree with you,it does look like something for honey or jam/jelly and the hole in the lid would accommodate a spoon. Whatever it turns out to be for its a pretty jar. I did a google search on 'antique jam jars' and looked at the images. This one came up near the top of the page: http://www.bryandouglas.co.uk/silverwar ... d1797a.htm
That isa a nice-looking pot. It looks like you could be on the right track with honey or jam.....sugar would be another candidate I would imagine. If it is made of silver there ought to be hallmarks that might give you insight into when and who made it and you can go further with your search from that point.
Great sleuthing K. and so promptly. The lid on mine is stainless steel, but as I said the colours in the glass are pretty. The hole for the spoon worries me a bit, it is very small. The spoon must have been long and narrow. Thankyou for that information.
Hi. Agreed with Palustris - the small hole in the lid would suggest a slim stemmed spoon with a smallish "scoop". The other suggestions are quite feasible but I will go for mustard also. Have a couple myself one with a hinged lid the other lift off. I posted a pic of a square glass one with hinged lid and spoon in Pottery and Porclain a few days ago qv. Syd. Two pots - the tall one certainly for mustard - the rounded one for mustard or such as Cranberry or Horseradish sauce - it is too small for jam/marmalade I think.. My thought was maybe a salt jar, but I would not think that is really what it was ever used for since the top is metal of some kind...salt would probably damage it. All my old salt pieces are all glass, but evidently it was for food of some kind. Your pot is beautiful.
I did find on E-bay a similar tea service sugar container with a handle that opened the lid. The glass was clear. I saved the picture but it's not mine so I don't know how to show it. :-( Jerry
I'll guild it and give it a nice updated sheen. Just kidding, I'd never ruin your pot like that. moderator's note: removed unnecessary quoting of previous post
