Anyone know where I could acquire fabric dye (of the washing machine type) in Manhattan?

Oh goodness, grocery stores, drug stores. craft stores, they all carry that stuff.

 

I use something called Rit dye, and it is available at major retail outlets, including grocery, craft, fabric and drug stores. I purchase it at Walgreens usually.
