One neighbor gave me apples this morning so I made apple pies. Another neighbor gave us a basket of grapes. If I get to them before DR, they will be jelly. He said holler if we want more grapes. I thought about hollering before he got to the end of the driveway, but decided that wouldn't do. I'll wait until I give him his share of the apple pie. Dooley
When I read the title of the topic I expected an image of some futuristic green hovering jelly but alas it was not to be. So it's a race to make them into jelly before DR devours them? Shall we take bets?
Yum! Mum picked hers a couple of weeks ago and they are now in a sack in my freezer waiting to be processed. I have run out of jars - and pantry space - so will have to put the jelly making on hold for now. Still tempted to make wine......
DR, if those are wild grapes, here they are called mustang grapes but I think they Muscadine grapes, how can you eat them right off the vine. The Mustang grapes irritate my hands like I had been burned with acid.....but they make the most wonderful jelly. Sure wish the vines around here had been able to produce anything. My in-laws usually give me bags of them then I return the favor by giving them and everyone else in the family at least a dozen jars of jelly at Christmas. Gosh I miss those grapes.
TONI, they are Concord grapes. They grow very well around here. I have two young vines that I planted two years ago. They are not ready to bloom yet but our neighbor has some old vines that produce quite well. They are grown commercially to produce juice, jelly and Wild Irish Rose wine. Good eating out of hand. dr
They look almost exactly like the wild variety. But then I guess grapes are something that don't come in different styles. I love red grapes just to eat.
Toni,We have some wild grapes around here too that look just like these but smaller. They also make good jelly but the birds usually eat them all. They need fruit too I guess. dr
DR didn't eat near all the grapes so I will get up in the morning and make juice. I can't make jelly tomorrow but I can get the juice made. Jelly on my day off which is Friday. Dooley
Maybe you won't be so tired this Friday, only working three days, so you will feel like doing. I don't remember, does it take a lot of time if you already have the juice?
I can make it in half an hour if I already have the juice. While the juice is heating I'll deal with the jars. Once the juice boils it doesn't take long at all thanks to pectin. I'm glad I don't have to boil it down like in the old days. Dooley
I never made that much jelly. I always stayed with preserves and jam. You used to make a lot of butter also, I seem to remember that. Wannabe
