This beauty was hanging around all day and didn't mind me taking photos. From my online search, I think it's a Pipevine. The backside is a stunningly iridescent blue. What do you all think? pipevine? Looks like one.... http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/spec ... s-philenor Pipevine Swallowtail. Do you have a species of Aristolochia in your yard or around the neighborhood? It's also known as Dutchman's Pipes or Pipevine? That's the host plant for their caterpillars.
Yes Cheryl, that is a beautiful Pipevine. In my garden they like the phlox, salvia and zinnias. Great shots, what is the flower they are on?
Toni... I don't have anything that even comes close to Aristolochia / Dutchman's Pipe. And I live in a very rural area so there's no telling if anyone around has some growing. Gayle... My Phlox is just a small mound of leaves and I have no Zinnias, but I do have a few Salvias surviving. It sure was having a grand old time on my Pride of Barbados though! It's beautiful iridescent blue back is what really caught my attention. I can't ever remember seeing one before. So glad it posed for a couple of photos.
That is a beautiful butterfly....but your Pride of Barbados is not less so. Very nice posting this time, Cheryl.
Thanks Sjoerd. While I was relaxing the yard this afternoon, I thought it had returned for another visit. But, was a different swallowtail. I'm so happy they like visiting me!
Cherylad glad you where able to get those great shots of sure a beauty. I have a lot of Morning Cloaks, and Tiger Swallow tail butterflies visit my garden. But they just do not hold still long enough for me to get a good pic of them. Or it's probably me that doesn't hold still long enough. You know, busy, busy, busy. I need to stop more often and smell the roses. Say what type of plant is that, that it is feeding on. It's beautiful.
Thanks Tooty... sometimes they pose for the camera... other times they just don't sit still long enough. And oh yeah.... the plant is "Pride of Barbados".
