I grow a lot of daylilies from seed and this was bound to happen sooner or later. I eagerly collect seeds as soon as the pods ripen so I can save the seeds from the chipmunks and mice. Four to five hundred seeds is not uncommon. Most I give away. Once planted they are on their own, I don't usually add, subtract, multiply or divide. Each clump flowers with whoever has the upper hand that year. Unless……a seed escapes……falls to the ground and evades detection by friend, foe and hungry rodent. Such is the case this morning as a daylily opened for the first time. Over morning coffee, the newspaper and Gardenstew pages, I glanced up to see this new flower. I was ready to add the newly opened bloom to the flower baseline database when I asked the question,"What is your name?"…….silence….. Oh!! was my next response, "You are really new." At least to me the parents were obvious, it would appear that mom was a 'Green Flutter' and dad was an 'Arthur Moore.' Junior has emerged first this year as mom and dad are 'late' and 'mid-season respectively. A peach self daylily is uncommon in our yard hence the mild excitement. This is a picture of Junior, say hello. First day for Junior ( photo / image / picture from Jerry Sullivan's Garden ) Jerry
Beautiful or should I say very handsome. Either way that's a great addition to your Daylily collection.
