This is a large tree in Santa Monica, CA that we are trying to save but have been unable to identify it. Some of the leaves have thorns on but most of them don't. The leaves are not evenly balanced but alternate on the stem. I have checked through several Internet web sites that are leaf-identifying, but have not found a definitive answer by going through their multiple choice questions. One leaf identifying site led me to the American Beech and one led me to a Chinese Elm, but judging from the description of their barks, this is neither one of those trees. I appreciate any assistance you can offer.

I don`t have a clue. Some of the leaves look similar to a holly and some do not. Its huge whatever it is.
