I have a large container which I want to grow perennials in. Its ok if I add a annual to fill in for now. I have a Huechera maxima that needs a home and I was planning to use that. What should I plant with the heuchera? Petunia, geranium? Can I also add a white creeping phlox that I need to replant anyways? The phlox was in the same container for the last 4 years. Here is a pic of the phlox.

    Hi Tina,

I try to go for some contrasting or complementing color in my containers. Think of it as being a mini-garden bed & you get the idea. Does your heuchera have green or reddish foliage?

BTW, that phlox subulata is so pretty!

    Congrats on your new container.

Cayuga - the huechera has green leaves. I forgot to mention that I also need to use plants that are hard to kill :)
I have come to fear my container gardening efforts since most of the plants die an early death in my containers.

Hmmm...do you know what is going wrong? I think of containers as needing more attention than plants in the ground. They tend to dry out more readily and need more regular feeding.

Not sure, Cayuga. I have never been very successful at container gardening.

Tina--I guess I would try plants that are inexpensive & generally considered to be very forgiving. A nursery ought to be able to help you, but I suggest annuals like geraniums, petunias, marigolds. I see you live in Seattle, where the weather is often damp, correct? Pots getting too dry too frequently should not be such an issue. Good luck! Perseverance usually works!

    Thanks Cayuga.
Well, I still try to grow plants in containers every year. Yesterday, I potted up a Salvia and a snowdrop in a container. Hopefully this time it wont die. I have geraniums in containers too. Thanks.
