Has anyone here ever grown pink banana squash? This was planted so innocently and has turned into a physco squash vine, taking over the entire end of the garden space. There are several fruits, 2 of them growing on the fence. They just keep getting bigger and bigger ... It looks like a giant pumpkin stretched out! How do I know when they are ready to harvest?
Netty they look beautiful and yummy! How to know when they are ready to harvest? Well this is what I always do for my bottle gourd and luffa. Watch them everyday and once the growth slow down it is ready. Good luck
I've grown them many times. I used them the same as pumpkins, although they have a milder flavor. I harvested when the shell was hard and the stem brown and dry and hard.
I just realized I didn't show you the end result of my sweet banana squash! This crazy vine produced only 4 fruits, one of which fell off the vine early. This is the largest of the 3 remaining squash, that weighed in at 25.4 pounds! Shown here with my 100 pound German Shepherd for size reference. Sargent was rather fond of it! haha Once sliced open, it had a thick, sweet flesh that was great for roasting and I used some for a side dish for dinner, as well as a pie and 2 loaves of pumpkin pie bread. I gave some of this to 2 neighbors and still froze six 2 cup portions. It is also a long keeping squash as its the end of February and I still have one left in my pantry!
That's a beautiful squash, Netty. You have me thinking maybe I should try some of my old seeds. They were productive for me in the past.
I'm so happy to see this post - I'm trying this beast for the first time this year and was unsure if it should have it's own real estate.
Yumm very tasty haven’t grown veggies in awhile. But they store very well for long periods and they are delicious. Easy to cook cut in half or quarters, add hamburger , sausage, onions… whatever…red sauce of cheese sauce … Beautiful Shepard nice comparison for sizing up the huge squash.
I like those types of plants…or should I say, their fruits. While they all have different flavours, they are all tasty to me. Well done, you. I have to say that I do not know this pink one of yours.
I'd never seen this type either, so when I saw the seeds at a seed swap, I thought I would give them a try! @Melody Mc. This vine definitely needs lots of "real estate"!
