You may think this is some kind of weird art-work statue…but it isn’t, it is an underground urinal that is usually underground, but at night it comes up and is available to cafe- and bar-goers. They are also above ground when there are big events like kermis. Some person was not paying attention when they parked their scooter.

You can see in the next pics how it works.

When you gotta go, you gotta go. Just hope the pop-up isn't on the move when someone has to go.

Haha…right you are, Marlin. Luckily those urinals rise out of the ground before the evening begins; however, if a person is lax or not thinking…this can happen:

This seems to me like a sign of a civilized country. These should be everywhere.

Maybe it should have a planter on tip with petunias and some pelargoniums, to prevent scooter parking.

That may have helped, but then we wouldn’t have seen the foto.
They used to use stainless steal troughs and there were “curls” all of which are better than blokes urinating up against the side of buildings or in corners.

Blokes urinating in the streets sounds unpleasant and smelly.

This might be my faulty memory playing tricks on me, but somehow I recall there having been urinal stations in the Netherlands that stored the urine for transport to a recycling station. From there, it was diluted and used on farms as a nitrogen fertilizer.

I think it's an interesting idea. Years ago, I tried it for a few years. I stopped after a couple of trees died - I think I killed them. Like so many things, "The devil is in the details". Salt content is an issue, and I thought maybe my medicines might be toxic too. I don't do it any more. But - we are on a septic system with a drainage field. The grass grows greener there than anywhere else.

Daniel, a comedic writer, Erma Bombeck, wrote a book titled The grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank.

Daniel— it is smelly…and illegal; however, when they use the urinals it is acceptable. You are right about those curls located here and there, especially outside train stations. You still see those.
I P into my compost bins regularly and periodically add some calcium to balance it out. I regularly turn my compost to oxygenate it and to mix it all up. In fact I did that two days ago. Holy-moly, what an amount of worms there were ! Same thing when I rolled-back the thick mulch layer on a veg bed, in order to plant my onions. They are such treasured gardening companions.

This is quite the invention - I've heard of such things perhaps being introduced in the center of one of our larger cities. I think the ones I saw had a door though...so that the ladies can also relieve themselves without a full moon.

The scooter on top is hilarious! Imagine if someone was sitting on it...."going up!" like an elevator. Or it a tourist didn't know what it was and was standing on it when it rose up from the ground...they'd think there were Aliens hahaha

Just the anticipation while waiting for the pop up potty … they are self cleaning and space saving… beats the old porta potty’s.

Hiya Mel, there are oval ones — one side or the gents and the other for the ladies.
Haha…yes, that would be a shock. ..Beam me up, Scotty.
BTW— there are things for the modest dames. Look up urinoir pour femme.

Pac— those things do not pop up out of the ground on request— they come up just before evening and at the end of the night they go back down.

The scooter on top of it makes a nice decoration piece! :D That was what I thought when I first saw the picture.

    Cheers, KK.

We could really use something like this around here. So many homeless people.
