The refuge located along the shoreline in Wells, ME is named in honor of Rachel Carson (1907-1964). Her book, Silent Spring, was the wake up call that launched the environmental movement. The refuge meanders along the coastline accenting the margin that is so important to a multitude of land and sea wildlife. The protected walkway along part of the 5,600 acre refuge provides periodic vantage points to view the wildlife habitat areas.

I'm glad Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring and inspired the environmental movement to create such a wonderful place for a wide variety of wildlife.
