I like the spots on this one's body. He had blue markings on the opened wings. Something specific to Taiwan or more common? This could be an ID challenge Spotted Body / Taiwan ( photo / image / picture from Frank's Garden )
I know that Monarch Butterflies have spotted bodies like your one Frank. However, someone else may know which one yours is. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
That could be it Sjoerd. http://www.google.com/search?q=Euploea+ ... r&tbm=isch From my recollection the blue was in the centre of the wing, but it's more likely that I am incorrect about this and that your ID is correct. Thank you.
http://www.maolin-nsa.gov.tw/user/Artic ... o=04000045 This article does mention that the blue/purple coloring changes hue in the sunlight so maybe what you saw was that and not the color in a different location. Geesh, the scientific classification of butterflies is more complicated than that of plants. My eyes hurt from trying to find out if yours and the Monarch are related, which they evidently are not from the best I can tell. It's caterpillar has the same 'eating habits' and the butterfly has the same migration habit as the Monarch butterfly here and they are both referred to as "milkweed" butterflies. Our Monarchs have made it to Taiwan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Monar ... on2-3a.png Long story short, too late!, I think Sjoerd gave the correct name for this one.
Thanks for the kind words all, and thanks for the investigation Toni. I appreciate all the help to satisfy my curiosity
I love butterflys....my eyes were drawn to the body right away. For some reason I am only seeing sulphurs here but I have to admit I am only out in the early morning with our high dangerous temperatures. Hopefully I will be able to enjoy more soon. Great picture Frank...
