hello everyone, been a while. i am keen on asking for your expert opinion. i got a plant at home in a pot. tall to the ceiling. last time i asked, most of you guys told me it was definitely a mimosa/silk tree, the one that makes the pink pom-poms. but... i am not sure it is the right answer. why? well, i checked other mimosa trees in the city - they are quite hardy even in romania despite their exotic looks - and what i have is full of thorns on the stem and fine light brown hairs and tiny spikes on the lower part of the leaves. lso, my plant seems to have some sort of "hooks" to hang on to things... like vining plants have. you will see this in the picture. these hooks (don't know how to call them) never had leaves... so they had other purpose... also... the tiny leaves i have are a little different in shape than the pics i saw online of mimosa tree. i really need someone to tell me if i have or not a mimosa... cause, if it is... i'd transplant it outside as they are hardy in romania - but if it's something else.... it may not survive outside in winter. i need all the help here i can get.... i hope the pics are relevant and show details. I'm certainly no expert, but it doesn't look like any mimosa tree that I have ever seen. Looks more like some kind of ferm.JMHO
It's definately Mimosa Pudica Calin. "The stem is erect in young plants, but becomes creeping or trailing with age. The stem is slender, branching, and sparsely to densely prickly, growing to a length of 1.5 m (5 ft). The leaves are bipinnately compound, with one or two pinnae pairs, and 10-26 leaflets per pinna. hello gaylyn and eileen, thanks for your replies. well, kind of fern? we'll see... but mimosa pudica is not what i have. i had lots of mimosa pudica and they rarely grew any taller than 1 m and leaves are much smaller - and what i have has really large leaves and already up to the ceiling in my little balcony i am still sure it is a mimosa kinda tree/climber... but no idea what kind so i keep trying
I've never seen a mimosa with thorns, an there are plenty around here. Has the thorns gotten any bigger. My thought was some kinda Crown of thorn (tree) but the thorns get much longer on them. hi trudy. well, not really big thorns.... more like spikes... some like on roses, and some much smaller and ever some tiny ones... like hairs, making the young stems look as if covered with a light brown layer. the "bigger" ones are in the main stem.
The 'hairs' as you call them is what made me think of a fern. I don't know what kind, but I have seen many types that have the brown fuzzy 'hairs' on the stems. Again JMHO !!!
I have a huge Mimosa and it does not have thorns at all .It doesn't have runners either.Calin I can't figure out what you have.I hope cajunbelle or bethie shows up and knows what it is.
But then again, I haven't seen a fern with thorns!!!!! Where oh where is Cajunbelle and Bethie ???????
well, it's def. not a mimosa or albizia or whatever the silk tree with punk pom-poms is called... which i am happy about. cause that one i can find here. i am happy i have something more exotic than that. what i am not happy about is that i will have to keep it inside and it's already up to the ceiling. well... let's see how it branches out. and it also makes a lot of mess as the little tiny leaves turn yellow and drop. i am more and more sure it is a climber of some sort. thanks for the help. if it does blooms - which i am not sure it will given that it's in a pot, and well, doesn't get all the sun it needs - i will post pics. bye all, calin
There are about 450 species in the mimosa family. The Mimosa pudica that Eileen suggests has thorns. You can read a bit about it here: Bio Miami.
Glendann we call those weeds here to, they grow wild in the woods an along the roadways. Never seen it grow to make a tree size though. But that could be a climate thing to.
