Gee Netty, how exciting are our lives!
Sunday is supposedly a "day of rest" but not if you have almonds that need shelling. Our almond collection was mounting, so we spent an hour and a bit shelling almonds. This involves a hammer, cradle, and chisel.

The first picture shows a rawhide mallet, but we decided we needed something with a little more heft, so we went to a hammer.
We are wondering why we planted almonds. Perhaps it was because we were told almonds won't grow in Texas.
The rest of Sunday will be relaxing, except for fixing dinner. Not like Netty's Sunday at all!

 

Looks like you got it figured out. That is trickier that hulling and shelling our hazelnuts.

 

How much weight do you think you will have, once shelled?

 

Sjoerd, there is still an equal amount of almonds on the tree. When we shell the ones we have, and the ones to come, we'll weigh them.
Pac, hazelnuts are delicious. Perhaps we ought to try growing them here . . . . Gluttons for punishment!

 

Yikes I can’t imagine shelling tons of almonds. My grandfather used to do walnuts by hand. Now they have shelter machines. My hands are toast have dupytrens from to much stress . Be careful. We only have … need I say it…
two hands. Now ya tell me..

 

Haven't been on as much lately. My 80 yr old mom sold her house. My sisters and i are dealing with the her ups and downs with the transition of living in an apartment. But did notice @Daniel W changed his profile pic LOL

 

@Clay_22 oh sorry mom’s coping with all that. Very kind of you to help her thru. It’s not easy leaving everything familiar in life moving to a different place. I hope she finds life a little bit easier and happier in her new home.

Good Tuesday afternoon all. Currently just 16°C and sunny. It is humid so it feels much warmer.
Another busy day at work, then came home and made dinner and tomorrows lunches, watered the garden and harvested some more beans and cherry tomatoes. In a while we are heading to the rink, where I will meet my sister and we will chat while DD skates, and then I will send her home with beans and cherry tomatoes haha

Easier today than yesterday! Yesterday I did the last of the pumpkins--two people can absorb just so much pumpkin pulp in pies and breads. Any pumpkins coming along will go to the food pantry, clearly labeled pie pumpkins, NOT for carving for Halloween..
Today was pineapple day. Husband brought home a lovely pineapple from the grocery (we don't grow them, but it may become another "to try" on our list.). I got it cleaned and cubed and in the fridge to go with tomorrow's pork tenderloin.
Netty, think you sister would like a few pumpkins?

t’Was a rainy day today, so it was a housecleaning day.

 

‘House Cleaning Day’ for @Sjoerd … WOW You are hired. I always think of house cleaning and weed extraction as a “Necessary Evil”. I did manage to shampoo the carpet. We (dogs) , are ready for the rainy season .

 

Oh Pak, I don’t envy you that dog hair cleaning job.

Good Saturday morning all. Currently 22°C and overcast. Weatherman said it was going to rain all weekend, but it hasn't started yet and I'm hoping I can get my grass cut.
I harvested a ton of tomatoes last night, and some peppers. I still have beans to pick and some herbs to dehydrate. When it does start to rain I'll kick into canning mode and try to get everything put up, as well as the 3 slabs of pork I got on sale this week. Some will be cut into chops, and the rest will become canned BBQ pork (just like pulled pork, my son LOVES it!)
Great winter meal in a shelf stable jar, for those long skating days. I also need to clean out my freezer! Sounds like I just created another busy day!

If I lived closer I would come take them all off your hands! My pumpkin patch is a failure this year due to striped beetles and borers.

We are under a storm warning. Flood watch and wildfires, possible tornadoes and hail. By 4pm. Probably loose power.
Gees anything else the weather station can add to todays forecast.

I was planning on cutting down the hazelnut tree today tired of fighting squirrels and chipmunks. It’s raining those big drops with thunder and lightening now.. it’s only 8am. Can’t wait til 4 pm. So as the saying goes that tree is aved by the bell… or lightening!

This weather is unpredictability rare for the PNW in August. I hope this isn’t a prequel to what to come this winter. When I lived in Colorado monsoons , hail in summers was the norm. Not here , the climate has drastically changed the last few years. Well.. no watering today. Moved all my pots to a safe spot don’t want them shredded from hail.
