This might sound very strange to some, but sometimes alternative thinking can unlock a situation in many ways. Which otherwise wouldn't ever have occurred to us... So if there's a problem, or someone, because of whom you are considering to relocate - Why not do something so that person ends up packing up their bags and head somewhere else. Therefore, whatever or whoever it is that's making you think about moving - Seriously consider turning the tables on it. Believe it or not, but there's actually a lot we as individuals can do. Which we often haven't realized - I myself have been successful at removing certain irritants from my area. I mean, why should I move? No, I'll stand my ground right here, come what may! Thinking is for free, so reverse thinking too shouldn't cost anyone anything. So that's all I'm suggesting.
Good luck Daniel W, whatever you decide. I moved from my long term home 4 1/2 years ago. Ended up not moving so far away after much research and property exploration (in three states). The Puget Sound, mountains and rainforest are where I landed after all was said and done. The move was less than an hour away. With climate change, the summers are hotter and winters even more mild in my chosen region. Have fun with exploring new places and checking out properties. A weeks stay in various communities can be fun and educational.
I would like to add that vacationing for a while, in the place you're thinking of living will only take you so far in your decision. Vacations are exhilarating because you have that leisure time and with all the new sights and sounds, very exciting but, actually living there might not be so much fun. There is a lot you miss about a place when you are vacationing.
How about reading the local newspapers of the area for a few weeks? Including school newspapers, (if any). Nowadays almost everything is available online. This way one can know just about everything happening in the area day to day. Also see if there are any free live-cams of the area. As well as looking up and talking to horticultural club members - Have to mention Google Earth too over here. Plus searching for YouTube vlogers of the area. Local online radio stations too. Everything is possible nowadays.
