Yesterday was a day off; now, today we are back to work. It is now time to remove most of the strawberry plant leaves so they can develop themselves for the winter with fresh, new leaves. The old leaves have done their job now and helped develop the fruits during the fruiting time. While the bed looks tidy, the plants themselves look a bit pitiful. Now then, the onions— the onions are beginning to “lie down”, indicating that they are ready to be lifted, from this point on. I sometimes wait until their leaves begin yellowing. They will be dried, or perhaps strung; if I have the time, and put away for use. The fun continues— time to cuff the leeks, well some of them anyway. At the end of our workday, it was time for a little harvest. We were in a jolly mood. The first beans of the season are in. The first tom harvest of more than one tom was a pickers’ delight. While in the greenhouse, a bit more pruning and suckering was necessary. More Swiss chard was cut and will be frozen in. The first small courgette and more spuds reached the harvest trugs.
