I chased this butterfly around the yard yesterday. Finally got a picture of it. I don't know whether these two are the same butterfly or not. The one on the ground was taken in my green house this morning. Thanks! On a chive flower ( photo / image / picture from Chrisle's Garden ) On the ground in the greenhouse, lighting was not good. Toni...I didn't click on your link yet but all of the information I found was that it is an eastern swallowtail like I get here. I will do a little more investigating on your link. I had seen pictures of the zebra swallowtail being more white. I will return.
Now I saw a picture of a western tiger swallowtail that looks like it...so I am not sure what it is besides that it is a swallowtail. The Beauty of the Swallowtail Butterfly - Squidoo copy and paste the link...also found an anise swallowtail
You may consider this one: Info copied from same website that Toni referenced... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Papilio canadensis Rothschild & Jordan, 1906 Family: Papilionidae Subfamily: Papilioninae Identification: Smaller than Eastern or Western Tiger Swallowtails. Upperside of forewing with relatively broad black stripes; underside with marginal yellow spots merged into continuous band. Hindwing with numerous orange scales. Extremely rare black female form. Wing Span: 2 5/8 - 3 1/8 inches (6.7 - 8 cm). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hank
Maybe we can get 2 or 3 pictures of the different ones side by side but seeing that the picture was taken in Canada, it most likely could be the canadian tiger swallowtail... Eastern Tiger Swallowtail ( photo / image / picture from Sherry8's Garden ) This one is the Eastern tiger swallowtail from Wisconsin
I get the Zebra and the Eastern Tiger mixed up and I think I did this time too. Might not be a Western Swallowtail because the wings don't look quite right. www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Papilio-rutulus But the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Papilio-glaucus The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail.... http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/spec ... canadensis
Thank you for all the input of the butterfly. I think by looking at Sherry8's picture that it looks like an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. There were swarms of them here this morning but they are gone now. Here are two more pictures. Thank you everyone for all your help with this one. Yes they are beautiful. I love seeing them in my garden also. We plant for them so then have a food source.
