I pollinated squash blossoms and tied up the trellised ones.

I think we"ll have a zucchini in a few days, and yellow squash in a week or so. I hope the winter squashes start to develop soon too.

It was very hot earlier this week. I'd go out early and be done watering by 10, then right back inside. I got a lot of work done on quilts, though. Yesterday we had a thing for a co-worker (when I worked) for her retirement. Supposed to be hot tomorrow, so I'll be watering early again.

Columbia R, I took my kids to Multnomah Falls when they were young. Did you get to see the total eclipse when it went over Oregon? We went down and stayed at a campground to see it. We lived in Tacoma at the time. I have pictures of my granddaughter and her bunny with eclipse glasses on.

I won't be doing anything today as it will be very warm and even warmer tomorrow.
But this morning I did have a check on the work I did yesterday.
I'm pleased with the way the phlox on the rockery has recovered and spread. Every year I'm having to dig out grass which tries to take over. The problem is their roots which are hard to dig out without disturbing those of the phlox.

Although every year I regularly prune off the second blossoming on the wisterias, some blooms always escape the secateurs.

Not a lot of colour in the garden at the moment other than the troughs on the patio although there will be more roses, but this hydrangea is doing well.

As is this rose. It got "banished" years ago to the bottom of the garden. As it's always in permanent shade, it doesn't bloom until it gets really tall.

The lawn continues to recover, there's now no trace of moss along the left-hand edge.
Parts of the rest need scarifying, but it's too wet at the moment. I don't mow this edge as short as the rest to allow the new grass to bed in.

The lawn looks great DHR. The new lawn looks happy. Have your phlox already bloomed this year? I used to have some creeping phlox but but it was taken over by a large patch of Coral Bells. I will have to look for it again for a different garden. It's always been one of my favourites.

Daniel— oh, that is looking good there. You have been pollinating…that is tedious. The rack looks great.

Here we have been working to take down the broad beans. We waited until all the remaining ones were ready, then picked the lot and lifted sll the plants, raked the bed then laud the empty plants upon the bed. Everything ship-shape and Bristol fashion.
    Some pics:
I am holding the last plant up with its last beans.

Your squash are so much further along than mine Daniel. Is that the Canadian squash you have climbing? I'm very curious how that one does.

Mel— yes it is. We will do those beans tonight or tomorrow…or later, depending on the temp outside.

    Thanks for the kind words.

The phlox flowered in late May, but the display wasn't as good as in previous years.
I bought four more plants to fill gaps. Hopefully it will look better next year.

I tried growing beans first time ever. Not doing well at all. I am jealous of your picture of the baskets full of them. Gotta learn how to grow them.

Early this morning picked 3lb of gooseberries. It's too hot to do anything else until tonight.

Jersey— mate, I am sorry to hear your beans did not do well. What kind were you attempting to grow this time?
There are so many bean sorts. The beans featured above were broad beans. There are other sorts. It is not too late to try planting one more crop of French climbers or bush beans. In my zone over here, now is about as late as you can get away with planting beans. I planted some in mid July a couple of years ago and got two harvests and a handful for seeds. I am still growing the offspring of those today.

If you try again, write on hr about it. I would follow that with interest.

Loggie— that is a wonderful harvest of gooseberries. Were you able to harvest them without getting pricked?

Today we worked only with the toms. We also had to care for a lady’s garden that is on hols for three weeks. Everything got a good watering with canal water. We also worked with two tom plants that are part of our trial.
