The Hollies ripped this one off.

 

Jimmy Helms had a hit with this in the seventies. But never had another one.

My wife and I saw him sing it at the Golden Garter nightclub in Wythenshawe, when it was in the hit parade

No male has had success with such a good tune, probably because a near three octave range is required.
However, more recently, this young lady recorded this "singing to her hairbrush in her bedroom."

I love the lyrics and in particular, the line "and the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses".

I always think of that line in midwinter when the sun is low in the sky and literally pours in through the windows.
