When is the proper time to fertilize a lawn? I'm on the WV and MD border and I noticed the lawn may be due for the first cutting of the year. Did I miss the best time or should I just do it?

    Thanks.

Hi Rick. :-D Over here, in Scotland, we fertilize our lawns for the first time in May. There may be someone along in a while you can advise you on when best to do it in your area though.

I agree with Eileen. I would say that the best time to fertilize your lawn would be during the month of May. However, different grass types and weather conditions will make a difference.

You must wait for the right time. Otherwise, it can damage your garden.

It all depends on the type of grass you grow, but grasses typically need nitrogen and many other nutrients during their seasons of active growth. If you fertilize your grass while its naturally dormant, you will be wasting fertilizer. If you space applications too far apart, your grass will grow fine for awhile, and then it will slow down, and then it speeds up again with the next application. Fall and spring are decent times to do the fertilizations. Hope that helps.

Now is an okay time to fertilize as long as you don't over-do it with the nitrogen. you want to promote root growth instead.
