Went to a local pond to photograph some wood ducks. They were there so I took a few shots of the male and female. Male wood duck ( photo / image / picture from Kildale's Garden ) Female wood duck ( photo / image / picture from Kildale's Garden )
If someone who didn't know better spotted the male and female together they could be forgiven for thinking they were totally different species. The male is a handsome fellow with that green 'helmet' and beautifully patterned plumage.
I wonder how it ended up that the male had the more striking features over the female. I guess maybe it's similar to the male peacock and their brightly coloured feathers.
Oh, wood ducks are so very pretty! During the summer we are going to build some wood duck nesting boxes, and hope and pray some will come to nest at our little pond.
Last year I started Nest Box Week. We have this years page to put out ready. We have it to start off in April. Any photos of your nest box being installed or installed would be great to add to next years page. You can see our first year here, Nest Box Festival I hope you can join us in this event. Always ready to accept pictures of them being used too.
In Pennsylvania we have the Wood Cocks. Here is one I almost tramped on. She had a nice clutch of eggs. Wood Cock by tsebmj, on Flickr Eggs by tsebmj, on Flickr This is a Flycatcher on the back porch at camp. Flycatcher by tsebmj, on Flickr
