It's the best thing you can do. I have a worm factory in my house. They eat all my kitchen waste and produce at least 50lbs + of compost a year. I use this compost for starting seeds. I also have 2 compost bins outside. I just emptied them and have a small mountain of black gold. I use this compost for the gardens and pots.

It depends on temps and what you put in it. You can help it along by cutting every thing into small pieces. I have an old blender I use for kitchen scraps when I have a lot. I also use it to grind up egg shells after the have been nuked for a few minutes. Newspaper, cardboard, dirt from your vac, dryer lint, computer paper, brown paper grocery bags the list is endless. I don't put heavy inked paper in compost. Never put meat or dairy in it. Keep layering in with green matter and brown matter and mix it up once in awhile to get air to bottom layers or poke holes into it. Read all you can read about it. There is lots of info out there. My bins I usually empty twice a year. The two produced about ten 5 gallon pails of compost this last time. You will be amazed at how much less garbage you have.
