There are still quite a few breeders of work horses here in Scotland. They are used on the farms as they used to be and they come with free manure - what could be better.
There is a Mennonite community in our county, and at least one of the farmers breeds Belgians. He trains them to the plow and then sells them to other farmers. I've heard that passing his Belgian-ownership test is harder than getting a PhD.!
We have a lot of Amish here, but they are finding it harder and harder to farm with them due to the increased pressure of the laws changing in accordance to animal waste in the fields as farmers and even more so as produce farmers. (Laws are being made by people who don't farm and have no idea that there are still farmers who use horses in the fields. It is crazy). They actually do all of their farming with horses in some of the sects around here. I don't think to snap any pictures of it because I think of it as normal.
