Last year we had some bug doing some really neat drawings on the outside of our watermelons. So I was wondering if this year the bug with the artistic bug would find our melons as we moved the patch.
Well sure enough it did. Last year it was a larger piece of art work which it had done. About 5" by 6".
Here is a pic of it's design this year. I just wonder what kind of bug could make such perfect circles.
Anyone have any ideas of what bug could do this.

I'm really curious about this artistic bug. I've never seen anything quite like it before. Let's hope someone can enlighten us to what it is.

Hi all and thanks for your funny and curious comments. It is hard to believe that a bug could make such neat patterns. You can actually feel the pattern on the outside. I thought maybe a slug did it. But there is never any slug trails on the melon it self.
Maybe next year I will have to do a stake out to see if I can catch the little bugger in the act. :-D

Kathyd intriguing is definitely what it is. I have contacted my Ag. extension here to see if they can help ID what bug might be doing this. I will let you know what they have to say. :stew1:

I don't know who did it but I found myself wishing they would multiply and create more patterns for you next year. :D I'm sorry. It's probably not good for the melons but I really loved the art work.

A very artistic bug for sure.

We used to always write the kids names on the pumpkins when the pumpkins were about half sized. By fall the names would have grown with the pumpkin (didn't hurt the pumpkin and was a neat caloused over name).

Toot--I like it. Very cool indeed. Please keep us informed re what the Ag. extension dept says. If they can't shed light, then for sure a watermelon stake-out is in order next summer!

Jewell that sounds like a neat thing to do with putting the kids names on the pumpkins.

Cayuga Morning the bug is quit artistic. Last years was even neater. I couldn't believe a bug could do such a precise circles. So far haven't heard anything for the Ag. dept. I think it may stay a mystery until next summer. Hopefully not thou. :stew1:
