I'm reading a book that takes place in the "Lowcountry" in South Carolina. The plant is a cluster of green and white stalks topped by long slender leaves. The locals call it rabbit tobacco or life everlasting. It said the locals used to smoke it for asthma. Anyone know what this is?

Does anybody know why it's called 'rabbit tobacco'? Strange name for a plant.

Many Years ago on the market they had
a medicine called Asthmador. It was in a can and you put it on a metal flat surface and light it and then hold your head over the smoke and it would relieve an asthma attack.I do wonder if it was made from this plant. This product was sold in the 50s.

Oh, no, Asthmador is a powdered combination of Belladonna and Datura stramonium(Jimson Weed) .
Pretty potent stuff.

I grew up in South Carolina and we had Rabbit Tobacco growing in the fields. I recall smoking it once. Not a lot, just a puff or two. I noticed an effect from it. Of course I noticed an effect from chewing a little Prince Albert.
We noticed Rabbit Tobacco mostly in the fall when it was sort of a green gray color.
