The summer reading program at the library (Mayer and Prescott Valley) is called "Catch the Reading Bug at the Library."
I am helping Dan with the one in Mayer. Next week is National Library week and they are having an Open House for the new addition.
To help publicize the summer reading program we are going to have a "Build a Bug" contest for all ages, children and adult. I bought 100 brown lunch bags. On Tuesday, Dan and I will put 10 items in each bag. Craft type items like pipe cleaners, cotton balls, wiggly eyes, brads, feathers, sequins, construction paper pieces, little paper cups, etc. We have lots of things left over from children's program crafts. The person making the bug is allowed to add one item of his or her choice from their home. They can use markers to color them and glue to stick them together. Then, they bring their bug back to the library and the bug gets a number. It will correspond to the name of the person and be listed in a book. The bugs will be displayed and voted on after a suitable time limit for building the bugs. There will be prizes for different age groups but anyone, children or adult can enter the contest. There will be prizes for the cutest, ugliest, most clever, etc. We haven't worked out all the details but will finalize them Tuesday when we make up the bags. The bags will be given out at open house and to patrons of the library until they are all gone. We sure hope everyone will help us have some fun and get out the word about the summer reading program.

What a wonderful theme and idea, dooley. If it is okay, I may do that (create bug bag goodies to build a bug) with my grands the next time they visit. I am always looking for ways to keep them entertained.

We have the same theme in our libraries this summer too and are now planning for our weekly events and activities. I love your build a bug idea. Every year, we have a competition similar to yours that's related to the theme and have the community vote for their favorites. The kids expect it from us now, and it's always a lot of fun! Summer's not too far away...isn't it??? Although you wouldn't know it by looking out my windows this morning with all the snow-covered branches!

We'll probably end up with a few live bugs and there is a man with some bug collections that will bring them to share with the kids. We are still planning things, too. dooley

That is a great idea,,Have tons of fun with that!

My kids used to participate in the sommer reading programs, and loved it,, we made it a ritual that after bathtime, both of my kids read one or two chapters of their book to me. Instead of the other way around,, it was fun, they would tuck me in bed, then crawl in themselves and start to read... great memories,,, great program.
