My very special lily

Category: Garden | Posted: Tue Aug 19, 2008 8:57 pm

I know I'm not alone in growing plants that hold a special meaning. This oriental lily, "Journey's End", is planted in memory of my father:

When he died at the age of 51 nearly 15 years ago, this lily was on his coffin. When I found the bulbs offered some years later, I was quick to order them. When it blooms, it reminds me of him. He's put to rest in another country, but the lily gives me a feeling that he's near us. It makes me both happy and sad, as loss and memories often do.

Beautiful Lily. It is nice to have a special plant in the garden to honor the loved ones who have passed.

What a wonderful reason to plant a plant. That flower is as beautiful as it is significant.
You are such a thoughtful gardner and growing this lily is such a good way of remembering your dad and to enhance the beauty of your garden at the same time.
I dont know lilies well--does this one have a distinctive fragrance?

The perfect lily to remember your dad by Dooley and a very appropriate name too.

Thank you all. It's got a lovely fragrance, as most orientals, and it's also good as a cut flower. I snip off the yellow thingies (word, please?) since the pollen dyes everything yellow and is nearly impossible to wash away.

A very pretty plant. I reckon the yellow thingy is called the Stamen. These make the pollen. The top part of the Stamen is known as Anther. I do not see them at the nursery but they are for sale as cut flowers.

The lily lives on as does the memory of your father. It's very poignant.
