May 17th Parade and Stuff

Category: Ramblings | Posted: Sun May 17, 2009 6:00 pm

Well, that's over and done with for this year then. We're sitting here, too full to move, and too tired to attempt to move if we weren't so full. Our feet are hurting too. *whimper*

The day started out with glorious weather, and it stayed glorious all day. The sun's still shining, it's 18.45 now.

Here are a few photos from today.

The parade is beginning to form in the school yard. Looks pretty chaotic to me:

Some will stop at nothing to film the parade:

There were lots of spectators along the route, cheering with us:

Can you see the parade stretching off into the distance?

And no end in sight either:

Now some details. The men with bunad are allowed to carry knives. The handiwork that goes into them is wonderful:

This little girl even decorated her braids:

Lots of the bunads have little pockets, and of course with a silver decoration and embroidery:

Many also have silver belts, like this one:

And the brooches are special. Each type of bunad use different ones:

I wonder how long this took to make:

This is standard accessory on men, women and children on our special day:

All in all a delightful day full of brass band music, happy children, songs and shouting.

I do love all the costumes and the work must take a long time to do .Thank you Droopy your photos are great and so glad your day was enjoyed by all.

We have had a wonderful day. Even the weather cooperated, which is rather rare. *lol* It's strange to see so many white blouses around, and I know I passed a couple of people I should know but didn't. What am I like! But people look so different when they're dressed up.

Hooray you had a good day and a good time. Your pics are great. Really tells the story of the day and the importance of the traditions.

Wonderful day Droopy, we did the same. I'm so stuffed its an effort to try and type,,lol. Its 9:30 or 21:30 and still light out, but everyone has quieted down for work and school tomorrow. I'm so glad you had a nice sunny day since i know your part of the country is fickle about weather. It was very sunny and heated up hotter than we all thought it would be today, but so worth it all. Gratulerer med Dagen!!

The knives, belts, brooches and embroidery are all wonderful Droopy. The hours of dedication and hard work that must go into making them has me gasping in admiration. So glad the weather was good for your special day. It certainly makes all the difference when the sun is shining doesn't it. Thank for sharing all your photographs with us.

Hip, hip hooray! I wasn't quite done yet. *lol*

Thanks for your wonderful comments. It means a lot to me.

I love this day because it's so full of happy children, song, ice cream and games. Even though it's Constitution Day it's a day which focuses on the children.

Another successful celebration with very happy people and beautiful traditional costumes.

I have done embroidery in the past and it does take a long time to do if you want it to turn out that beautiful.

What a delightful day you had. The embroidery work was quite impressive. The jewlry and costume decorations were very interesting.
I especially liked those ribbons with the symbol in the middle (that every participant had to wear)...and that supurb knife and scabbard. Very impressive indeed.

Wow

The Bunads nd Brooches and embrodery are right up my alley.Oh how I loved the parade and the costume on all of you .
Job well dong.
Is the embroidery hand done?
Gorgous.

Thank you all. I'll be busy tidying away flags and ribbons today.

Sjoerd, the symbol is the Norwegian lion, our State symbol.

The embroideries are all hand done, yes. Those bunad costumes are very expensive to buy and one has to order some of them a year or two before they're needed, because of the few people who know how to embroider them properly and the demand for the bunad.

THat was pretty busy - with the emphasis on pretty.
Constitution Day - you are actually correct - even though is was your COnstitution Day the emphasis should always be on the young ones since they are the future. I just love the embroidery and the intricare carvings on the knives/daggers/dirks.
Do tell - are there any lions in Norway????

Only in the Zoo, Palm Tree. *lol* And on the official documents, coins and such.

What gorgeous handworking, costumes and knives. The embroidery reminds me of what my grandmother used to do. I still have samples of it. Thanks for sharing your day with us, Droopy.
