New Camera Day 2 (lots of photos)

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sat Aug 16, 2008 11:21 pm

Today I actually read the Nikon D40 owner's manual (helps to know what you're doing), then went outside to try again. There are so many bells and whistles on this thing! It's so nice to be able to take 100 pictures without having to worry about the cost of film. The main thing I love about this camera over my point & shoot digital, is the lack of a lag between shots, waiting for the camera to get ready.

Butterfly Weed

Almost caught this guy clearly in flight.

I love the leaves on the variegated Weigela.

Superb photographs. It's obvious that you're definately getting to grips with your new camera. I look forward to seeing many more of your shots.

Lovely photos! You're certainly on your way with that new camera, I'm more than a tad envious. I dislike the time lapse between pointing and shooting too, and the insufficient macro mode. I've tried to photograph lily beetles forever.

Looking good PL!! I'm envious also and cant wait until I can graduate to a DSLR. I've even checked out your camera and it gets very good reviews.

Are the shots you have here taken in macro mode? I'm assuming they are since the background blurs so the subject stands out. My question is..would you mind taking a photo of something twice, one in auto and then the same exact one in macro? I'd love to see the difference.

Love those closeups, Pianolady. What a scrapbook they'll make. Be looking for more.

Thanks everyone!
Joann, I'm not using automatic settings for these photos, but "program" instead. You can choose your aperture and the camera will automatically choose the correct shutter speed to get the best result (or vice versa). You don't get the same results on the auto or macro setting. You get nice photos on those settings, but not as good. You can also use a manual setting, but I don't see the point unless you're wanting a special shot the program mode doesn't achieve.

I'll leave some sample photos of the different settings in my next blog post.
